Story behind the Google Chrome [Funny]
Google patches Chrome days before hacking contest
Computerworld - Google has patched vulnerabilities 11 in the Windows version of Chrome, including one that earned its finder the first $1,337 check from the company's new bug bounty program. Like Apple, which updated Safari last week, Google beefed up the security of its browser just days before the Pwn2Own browser hacking contest was to kick off in Canada. Danish vulnerability tracker Secunia rated the update as "highly critical." Although Google typically hides technical details of the most serious vulnerabilities when it issues an update -- it blocks bug tracker entries to prevent attackers from using the information -- allof the 11 bugs are behind the wall this time. "The referenced bugs may be kept private until a majority of our users are up to date with the fix," explained Orit Mazor, a technical program manager with the Chrome team, in a blog entryWednesday. A bug in WebKit, the open-source browser engine that powers Chrome as well as Safari, earned researcher Sergey Glazunov a check for $1,337, the maximum Google pays for vulnerabilities as part of a bounty program that debuted last January. Most flaws earn their finders just $500, but "particularly severe or particularly clever" bugs reap rewards of $1,337 each. The amount is a reference to "leet," a kind of geek-speak used by some researchers; there, "leet" is rendered as "1337." Other vulnerabilities were credited to Mark Dowd, a noted browser and OS vulnerability researcher who is working under contract for Google; Robert "RSnake" Hansen, CEO of SecTheory; and Aki Helin of OUSPG (Oulu University Secure Programming Group), Oulu University in Finland. Altogether, Google paid out $3,337 in bounties for the bugs it patched Wednesday. Only the Windows "stable" channel -- a term Google uses in place of "final" -- was patched; the Mac and Linux versions of Chrome have not yet left the "beta" channel. Google added several non-security features to Wednesday's update, including integrated language translation and new private browsing settings, that had made their way into the beta earlier this month. Chrome is the second browser to be patched in seven days. On March 11, Apple fixed 16 flaws in Safari. Both browsers' updates were timely: Starting next Wednesday, Chrome, Safari, Microsoft's Internet Explorer 8 (IE8) and Mozilla's Firefox will go head-to-head with an unknown number of hackers who will try to exploit unpatched vulnerabilities and win $40,000 in cash at Pwn2Own, the annual contest sponsored by 3Com's TippingPoint. On Thursday, Aaron Portnoy, a security research team lead at TippingPoint and the organizer of this year's Pwn2Own, predicted that Safari would fall to attack on the second of the contest's three days, while Chrome would be the sole survivor. The last time Google patched the stable build of Chrome for Windows was in late January. Chrome is now the third-most-used browser on the planet, having grabbed the No. 3 spot from Safari in December 2009, and as of last month, accounted for approximately 6% of all browsers in use, according to Web measurement vendor NetApplications.com. Google Chrome can be downloaded for Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7 from the company's site. Users running the stable build will receive the update automatically.Only browser predicted to survive Pwn2Own gets 11 fixes
The update to Chrome 4.1.249.1036 fixes six flaws rated "high," the second-most-severe ranking in Google's four-step threat system; plugs three "medium" holes; and quashes two "low" bugs.

Google, partners take aim at the TV
Google and Intel have teamed with Sony to develop a platform called Google TV to bring the web into the living room through a new generation of televisions and set-top boxes. The move is an effort by Google and Intel to extend their dominance of computing to television, an arena where they have little sway. For Sony, which has struggled to retain a pricing and technological advantage in the competitive TV hardware market, the partnership is an effort to get a leg up on competitors.
Some existing televisions and set-top boxes offer access to Web content, but the choice of sites is limited. Google intends to open its TV platform, which is based on its Android operating system for smartphones, to software developers. The company hopes the move will spur the same outpouring of creativity that consumers have seen in applications for cell phones.
The project, which has been under way for several months, was described by people with knowledge of it. They requested anonymity because the partners were not allowed to speak publicly at this point. Spokesmen for Google, Intel and Logitech declined to comment. A Sony spokesman said he was not familiar with the project.
For Google, the project is a pre-emptive move to get a foothold in the living room as more consumers start exploring ways to bring Web content to their television sets.
“Google wants to be everywhere the Internet is so they can put ads there,” said one of the people with knowledge of the project. The Google TV software will present users with a new interface for TVs that lets them perform Internet functions like search while also pulling down Web programming like YouTube videos or TV shows from Hulu.com. The technology will also allow downloadable web applications, like games and social networks, to run on the devices.
The TV technology runs on Intel’s Atom chips. In addition to the makers of traditional cable and satellite set-top boxes, Cisco Systems and Motorola, many others have entered the game, including Microsoft, Apple, TiVo and start-up companies like Roku and Boxee, which already stream video from Netflix, MLB.com and other websites directly to television sets.

How your email gets hacked
LONDON: Experts have warned that hackers can comfortably crack questions used as security checks in webmails.Joseph Bonneau, a security researcher at the University of Cambridge, insists that attackers can break into at least 1 in every 80 accounts if they get three chances to guess answers.
"The numbers were worse than we thought," the BBC quoted him as saying.
He recommends webmail firms to replace simple answers with more complex tests to confirm a person's identity.
Bonneau teamed up with Mike Just and Greg Matthews, from the University of Edinburgh, to check how frequently attackers can be successful in answering security questions.
The researchers claim that hackers are successful in getting answers to security-check questions correct every 80 accounts, as information people use as answers are often publicly accessible, such as US marriage and birth records which were viewable online for a long time.
He said, "We measured how hard it was to guess answers. Asking what was the name of someone's first grade teacher seems like a secure choice. The problem is that there may be many teachers out there named Mrs Smith."
Bonneau warns that cyber criminals maintain a long lists of e-mail addresses to attack. He added, "They have the big list and most of them they will not get enough access to.
"Webmail was never really designed for security but it is taking on a pretty important security role. Once you have an e-mail account you can take over a lot of other things with it."
However, the researchers believe Webmail firms can tighten their security. Bonneau explained, "They can make guessing a lot harder if they shape the answers that they allow. Such as not letting you register Smith as an answer."
“The chance of guessing three things simultaneously is pretty low.” Websites such as Google, are already sending reset passwords by text message in a bid to protect the account of its users.

22 yr old Indian to solve cyber crimes @ mouse click
Sunday,14 March 2010, 20:19 hrs
Jaipur: The 22 year old cyber crime expert, Sunny Vaghela, who is also the CEO of TechDefence, an information security solution provider is set to dive in the cyber war by making solutions available at a mouse click. Vaghela, who had exposed loopholes in mobile networks, social networking sites right from the age of 18, will launch a website where any complaints on cyber crime will be solved, reports Times News Network.
"This website is dedicated to solving cyber crimes and create awareness about it. All you need to do is to post your complaints on the website which will be analysed by a team of ethical hackers, mostly city-based engineering students. The team will issue a list of suggestions for police on how the case can be solved effectively," said Vaghela.
These kinds of feats are nothing new for Vaghela, who at the age of 18 exposed loopholes like SMS and Call Forging in Mobile Networks. The technology that allowed to send SMS or Make Call to any International Number from any number of your choice. At 19, Vaghela found loopholes like "Session Hijacking" and "Cross Site Scripting" in popular social networking site Orkut.
Vaghela has mastered the art of cracking codes and extracting information from servers based in different locations. He gave the exact time and locations to the police department helping them in solving several cyber criminal cases. His biggest success was tracing the origin of the terror email sent by Indian Mujahideen minutes before the Ahmedabad serial blasts on July 26, 2008 and played a vital role in investigation of the same. In a bid to prepare a force of ethical hackers to expose the web fraudsters, Vaghela has imparted training in 10 engineering colleges of the city.

Country's first FTTH service launched in Jaipur
TNN, Mar 14, 2010, 05.48am IST
JAIPUR: In an effort to provide superior video and data services, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has launched the ambitious Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) service for the first time in the country at Jaipur.
The FTTH service was inaugurated by minister of state for communications & IT Sachin Pilot in the presence of BSNL CMD Kuldeep Goyal and G K Agrawal, CGM, BSNL Rajasthan circle here on Saturday. While 68 buildings have already been provided fibre connectivity, work is in progress at about 200 buildings and complexes.
The service, jointly launched by BSNL and AKSH Optifibre Ltd, will provide multiplay services with high definition content for its 35,000-plus customers in six districts of Rajasthan namely Jaipur, Jodhpur, Udaipur, Ajmer, Kota and Alwar. The FTTH network has been built on the Gigabyte Passive Optical Technology.
With the launch of FTTH technology, BSNL would be able to offer high-speed broadband access up to 1000 Mbps and a plethora of services based on Triple Play (voice-video-data) services like IPTV, HDTV, 3DTV, video on demand, bandwidth on demand, video conferencing, interactive gaming, and several other value added services. The optic fibre technology, which replaces traditional copper-line with optical fibre, also called the last mile connectivity,' can deliver world-class Triple Play experience to the consumers.
The FTTH service relies on a Self-Healing Network, which is able to provide seamless services, even in case of damaged optical fibre when the information will be routed through another line.

BSNL Unlimited EV-DO Gets Cheaper
Monthly tariff slashed to Rs. 750 from Rs. 999
BSNL has announced the launch of a promotional plan that will allow users to avail its EV-DO based broadband connection at a discounted price of Rs. 750 per month. The same service cost users Rs. 999 per month until now.
The plan offers "unlimited" data usage with a maximum speed of 3.1 Mbps. This plan has been extended for existing as well as new users. However, you might want to act quickly because this offer is only valid for those who apply for it before March 31, 2010. There is one catch though - this service comes with a fair usage policy - which means that if you exceed a limit prescribed by BSNL, you would be liable to paying Rs. 0.50 per MB. This, mind you, is by no means cheap!
BSNL's EV-DO service is available in only select towns across India and uses a CDMA based 3G technology. It is unclear as to how many cities currently serviced by BSNL's EV-DO service will get these new tariffs. If your town was already under the EV-DOyou might want to get in touch with your local BSNL telephone exchange to find out if you can get a new connection with this plan - or simply change your plan to this new one.
Apart from this unlimited plan, BSNL also has a few other plans as shown below:

Cyber attacks worry firms more than terrorism

When it comes to threats, natural or man-made, Indian companies have rated cyber security as a major concern. In the light of increased cyber attacks, over 42 per cent of enterprises perceive cyber crime as a bigger threat than terrorism, crime and natural disasters.
This was one of the findings of ‘2010 State of Enterprise Security Study,' a global study carried out by Symantec Software Solutions Pvt. Ltd., where Indian companies from sectors such as telecom, hospitality, manufacturing, retail and technology participated.
“Indian enterprises are experiencing frequent cyber attacks and the losses incurred due to them are escalating. In the past 12 months, 66 per cent of the companies experienced cyber intrusions and 51 per cent of them reported repeated attacks, while 34 per cent have experienced high number of malicious hits. On the other hand, 31 per cent said there were internal attacks as well,” said Vishal Dhupar, managing director, Symantec Software Solutions Pvt. Ltd., at a press conference here on Tuesday.
Also, each cyber attack had a financial impact, as organisations reported loss of revenue. “Apart from financial loss, companies will have to put up with damaged brand reputation, loss of customer trust. The average revenue lost by companies due to the virtual attacks was recorded at Rs. 58.59 lakh in 2009.” Interestingly, with IT security becoming a daunting issue for enterprises, the study pointed out that implementation of enterprise security is turning into a difficult task.
“Enterprise security is understaffed and the most affected areas in organisations are network security, web security and data-loss prevention. To tackle the issue, companies need to secure their messaging and web environments and defending critical internal servers. They should also have the ability to back up and recover data and respond to threats rapidly.”
To overcome such threats, companies should develop and enforce IT policies to secure data breach in anyway possible. “By prioritising risks and defining policies, companies will not only be able to identify threats but also come up with remedies. Also, they should know the location of sensitive information and how it's coming or leaving the organisation. Companies should be able to monitor and report their systems status and be ready for any kind of threat.”
